The new guidebook says that for spa treatments, the place to go - at least if you’re male - is the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Its Absolute Spa is “designed exclusively for men, with video games to distract you from your pedicure.”
Women should head to the Century Plaza. It’s not a luxury hotel but it has one of the best spas and hair salons in Vancouver, the book says.
The Pan Pacific offers harbour, port, mountain and city views - the best of any hotel in the city.
“Style seekers,” meanwhile, should go to the Opus Hotel, “the hippest place to stay” in Vancouver. “The rooms feel like a stylish urban pied a terre, with velvet sofas to hang out on while watching a ginormous flatscreen TV.”
For spotting celebs in town for film shoots, the book recommends Sutton Place Hotel. The guest list has included Judi Dench, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Elton John.
For elegance, stay at the luxurious Wedgewood, “where opulent surroundings conspire with top-notch service to make this one of Canada’s best hotels.”
And for “a slice of local heritage,” try the Barclay House, a sophisticated B&B where “crystal chandeliers, clawfoot tubs and complimentary sherry take you back to a more civilized age.”
“Time Out Vancouver” is published in Britain and distributed in Canada by Penguin Canada.

Day 1: For those who have stayed at the Barclay House over the past few weeks, you may have overheard our staff talking about an upcoming teambuilding event we have been planning to our sister property (THE HAIDAWAY) in beautiful Tofino, BC!
“The Haidaway” - Front View

“The Haidaway” - Backyard Sunset on Chesterman Beach

“The drive up starting at 5.30AM - yes, it was snowing!! Are we there yet?” A scenic 3.5 hour drive into Vancouver Island through Nanaimo and Port Alberni.

“The Arrival” Larry jumps for joy, then enjoys a ride on the famous Tofino surf!
?
?
“The Haidaway Tour” Being accustomed (and spoiled) with the luxurious setting of the Barclay House, we were just as impressed with the amazingly tranquil and gorgeously West-Coast decorated Haidaway! With Chesterman Beach as our backyard and 4 separately rooms each lovingly decorated to provide us all with the peaceful retreat from busy city life.

“Hello Barclay House, this is JJ speaking….”

“Lunch at the Weigh West” - Can you spot the rainbow and bald eagle? Followed by a scenic boat tour!

“Back home for a delicious home cooked meal by Chef JJ - yuummmmm, steaks!!!”
?
?
Day 2: Yesterday was a long fun filled day but we were ready for more fun and excitement. First, we enjoyed breakfast at The Middle Beach Lodge Resort (yummy ginger jam!), then off the beaten path to check out a crashed WWII plane.? Hey, where did Kim and Carey go???
?
“Hello Barclay House, this is JJ speaking…”
?
Then, we went on our ‘Hunter/Gatherer’ expedition to catch our own crab and oysters for dinner. Wow!
?
Not only was it a memorable experience baiting our own crab traps (see the video here) and picking oysters, but the best part was having a private chef (Brian) cook up an absolutely memorable dining experience - crab sushi, oysters w/shrimp, black cod and of course, crab!! ….oooohhh yah, this is the life!
?
?
Day 3 - Unbelievable. In a word, that describes our experience in Tofino. We had an incredible time and enjoyed each other’s company immensely, but now, it’s back to Vancouver and the Barclay House! JJ takes a moment to reflect on the way home.

Not before running into some minor car troubles on the way home. A quick top up on some fluids and we were back on our way.

JJ catches some rest on the ferry ride? home.

?
The Haidaway in Tofino - our 4 bedroom vacation rental is available exclusively to Barclay House guests. For more details or to book your stay, please call 1-800-971-1351 or 604-605-1351 or email info@barclayhouse.com

Can you spot JJ? on this picture??

One of the great pleasures of heading up to Whistler/Blackcomb Mountain - aside from the world class skiing or snowboarding - is the beautiful? scenic drive along the Sea to Sky Highway.? Amazing? ocean views and luscious forest greens make this trip a must if you’re visiting here.
Here is a photo I took on my most recent trip up with a picture of me also on the mountains going snowboarding!
